Growing up in a Sri-Lankan family gave me a wonderful insight into the power of food. We would always be entertaining guests, either for parties or for relatives and friends just popping in. My sister and I were encouraged by our parents to help in the kitchen, preparing the ingredients, cooking and looking after our guests.
"The idea of using food to show people love and care inspired me…"
These rich experiences led me to see food as central to the family, bringing people together so they can share their day, talk about their achievements and bond. The idea of using food to show people love and care inspired me to train as a chef.
After 14 years in the industry, I still absolutely love my job. I’ve worked for some fabulous 4 and 5 star hotels and rossette restaurants In London and Australia, but in 2015 I decided to realise my dream and set up my own business.
Launching Mala’s Tiffins & Teas has enabled me to combine high quality, professionally prepared food with a truly attentive service. Entertaining and feeding people is such a pleasure. There really is nothing is better than seeing the smiles and excitement on people’s faces when they see or eat something I’ve created.
